Recent research has revealed the places in Great Britain with the highest crime rates, finding the Cleveland Police in Yorkshire deals has dealt with the largest number of times in proportion to its population.
The study found that Cleveland had 114.9 crimes per 1,000 people, while West Yorkshire was in second place with 111.6, followed by Greater Manchester (107.9), West Midlands (102.9), and Merseyside (96.7).
Another study, from Comparethemarket.com, took a closer look at burglary rates over the festive period, where over 18,000 burglaries were predicted to take place, with £7.8 million worth of gifts ending up in the wrong hands.
Christmas burglaries are not uncommon, with opportunistic criminals seeking to take advantage of empty homes while people celebrate with families.
The research found that London was the worst hotspot for festive thievery, with figures pointing to around 5,209 burglaries, or 168 break-ins a day in December.
Following London is the West Midlands, with 1,671 predicted burglaries, and West Yorkshire with 1,288 predicted in December.
The numbers for regions outside the capital may be significantly lower, and burglaries, in general, are on the decline in the UK, but authorities are urging people to take some basic steps to safeguard their homes, and not become complacent.
