Given that a fingerprint access control scanner relies on multiple sensors in order to detect biometric data, it is essential that they are kept in clean, working order as much as possible.
This means that the scanning surface needs to be free of dirt and scratches as much as possible in order for it to function effectively.
As well as this, given that by design a lot of people will be touching the scanner, cleaning will be important in order to minimise the spread of disease in the same way that office telephones should be regularly cleaned and sanitised.
The most important rule for cleaning a fingerprint scanner is to be gentle and avoid pouring liquid directly onto the reading surface itself, as this can cause damage to the scanner and may even require the replacement of parts.
As well as this, soft microfibre cloths should be used instead of paper and other abrasive materials. Similarly, do not pick at the reading surface with a fingertip, pen or pin.
Instead, use a damp microfibre cloth to remove dirt and debris. If necessary, mild soap on the same damp cloth can be used to remove stubborn dirt, but it must be cleaned away and dried quickly, otherwise it could potentially damage the reading surface.
Finally, wipe the surface dry using another clean microfibre cloth.
For tiny parts of the surface, such as corners or smaller scanning surfaces, a cotton swab can be used in place of a microfibre cloth, as they are gentle, small, accurate and unlikely to cause damage.
If there is considerable dry dirt or debris on the scanner, it can be gently blown away using an air blower or a canister of compressed air, although if you are using the latter, make sure to point it a safe distance away to avoid inadvertently introducing moisture to the scanner.
A cleaner fingerprint scanner is a more effective long-lasting scanner, so knowing to keep it clean easily will keep your business more secure and your access control more effective.
