Tips For Improving Your Security Systems Ahead Of Winter

There’s no denying that the evenings have started to draw in as we move into September and that means that autumn and then winter is around the corner. Of course, this happens every year, but it is the perfect reminder to check your building’s security systems to ensure you are set for the darker months when break-ins can be more common.

This applies whether you’re thinking about security from a home or business perspective as both can become targets for criminals.

Here are our top three recommendations to make sure that your home or business is ready for the winter season.

Review your current security

Before you make any changes to your current security system, check how your current setup is working. If you already have the likes of CCTV and biometric access control installed, do a sweep to make sure everything is still functioning as it should.

Are all of your CCTV cameras in working order? Has anything obscured the view of the cameras in recent months that needs to be rectified? This is also a good reminder to check that the permissions for your access systems are up to date.

However, if you are considering installing a CCTV system at your home, it’s important to think about how your cameras could capture people outside of your property’s boundary. There are guidelines on the government website to ensure that you are not impacting others with your home security setup.

It’s also important to double check your burglar alarm system to ensure it works as it should.

Don’t forget about lighting and fences

Security lights are easy to overlook in the summer months – after all, when it’s light until nearly 10pm you may not notice whether the light is coming on as it should when you go past it!

Check that the bulbs are in working order and that the sensors are activated as you would expect. This will give you peace of mind that when it gets darker, your lights will be in good working order.

This is also a good time to check your fences and make sure they haven’t been damaged anywhere or are in need of maintenance. By checking this now, you’ve got time to make repairs before we properly hit autumn and winter.

Get help to improve your security

If your review of your current security situation throws up any nasty surprises, now is the time to get support to fix any potential issues.

While the latest data from the Office for National Statistics shows that burglary, both domestic and non-residential, has fallen by eight per cent in the past year, it is also well-known that incidents of burglary increase in the winter months. However, over 245,000 cases of burglary were still recorded in the year-ending March 2025.

Assess where your property is most vulnerable and allocate time and energy into shoring up that area first. That might mean installing CCTV cameras, fitting additional security lighting or even upgrading to biometric door systems.
